How to get the transcript of an Instagram Reel
Last updated November 3, 2026
Instagram has no transcript view. Many Reels have auto-generated closed captions, which you can turn on from a Reel's Options menu, but there's no way to copy them. To get a Reel's words as text, paste its link into a transcript site. Neatsaves Pro writes down what's said in the Reels you save and keeps it searchable.

Does Instagram show transcripts for Reels?
No. Instagram writes closed captions for reels and videos with speech recognition and shows them while you watch, but there's no full transcript to open or copy.
Instagram says captions may not be available to everyone, and their default language follows your device's language settings. Creators can turn captions off for their own Reels. (Instagram Help, Instagram Help)
The text under a Reel is different. It's the caption the creator typed, and it often says nothing about what's spoken in the video.
How to turn on captions for Reels
On a Reel, tap Options, then Closed captions, then Always show closed captions. To change it for every video at once, use Captions and translations in your settings.
- Tap the Reel.
- Tap Options, then Closed captions.
- Tap Select next to Always show closed captions.
For every Reel: go to your profile, tap Menu, then under Your app and media tap Accessibility and translations, then Captions and translations. You can't change captions on video ads in your feed. (Instagram Help)
How to get a Reel's transcript as text
Copy the Reel's link from the Share menu and paste it into an Instagram transcript site. Sites that transcribe the audio work even when the Reel has no captions, as long as it's public and someone speaks.
- On the Reel, tap Share, then Copy link.
- Paste the link into a Reel transcript site and start it.
- Check the text against the audio before you quote it.
They need a public Reel. A Reel that's only music has nothing to transcribe, and very long videos can run past a site's limit. (Eden)
Keep the words of the Reels you save, with Neatsaves
Neatsaves brings in the Reels you save on Instagram and reads each caption. On Pro it also watches the Reel and writes down what's said, so you can search a Reel by its spoken words.
- The Chrome extension's Sync tab opens Saved on instagram.com, scrolls to the end and sends each post over, Reels included.
- After that, tapping Save on instagram.com saves the Reel to Neatsaves as well. On your phone, share the Reel to Neatsaves.
- On Free, Neatsaves reads the written caption and the cover. Pro adds what's spoken, for up to 50 videos a day.
- Open a save to read the words under What's said. Search covers them, and over MCP the get_save tool returns them to Claude Code or Cursor.
- Your Reels land in the same categories as your TikToks and YouTube videos, so a recipe from one app sits next to a recipe from another.
Free holds 25 saves. Pro is $8 a month or $72 a year and holds up to 25,000. Search by meaning and export work on both plans.
Questions
- Can you copy Instagram Reel captions?
- Not the auto-generated ones. Instagram shows them on screen while the Reel plays, and its help describes no way to copy or download them. A transcript site turns the speech into text you can copy.
- Why don't Reels show captions for me?
- Instagram says captions may not be available to everyone. Check Options, then Closed captions, on a Reel, or Captions and translations in your settings. The creator may also have turned captions off.
- Can I get the transcript of a private Reel?
- Not from a transcript site. They open the Reel from its link, so they only work on public Reels.
- Does Neatsaves transcribe Reels on the free plan?
- No. Free reads the caption the creator wrote and the cover. Writing down what's said in the video is part of Pro, up to 50 videos a day.
- Where are my saved Reels on Instagram?
- In Saved: tap your profile, then the menu in the top right, then Saved. Reels sit there with your other saved posts. Our Instagram saved posts guide has the details.
